cotton, until the desired amount of re-duction has taken place, when the negative is washed and dried. If it is desired to intensify that part, I find nothing better thanthe well-known sulphide toner or redeveloper. Apply the var-nish as for reduction and bleach the desired part and washthoroughly. Then apply the sulphide solution until the bleachedpart has turned brown. It is then washed and dried. I use either of the following varnishes: celluloid, rubbercement and asphaltum. The celluloid varnish is prepared bydissolving 30 grains ~of clean celluloid in i ounce of amyl ace-tate. The ceruloid is cut in thin strips so that they will dis-solve more readily. Ths is perfectly transparent, and need notbe removed from the negative, but if it is so desired, it can bedone by saturating a wad of cotton with clear amyl acetateand rubbing it off, and finally with some alcohol. Rubber cement is prepared by mixing one part of the com-mercial rubber cement, which can be purchased at any house- 218

It is applied thesame as the celluloid and dried before the other operations arestarted. This varnish aso is transparent and need not beremoved, but can be cleaned with plain benzine or naphtha. The asphaltum varnish is prepared by thinning as boughtwith benzine, just thin enough to flow easily. This is appliedin the same way as the celluloid and rubber, also dried, and asthis is opaque, it is necessary to clean it off after the other 219 operations are completed, and must be done as soon as the nega-tive has been dried after intensification or reduction has takenplace. If done at this stage it comes off quite readily, but ifleft on too long it does not come off so easily. When applying the varnishes it must be done so that theparts are thorouglry covered; otherwise the chemicals laterused will eat into the uncovered parts. As a precaution to thisI
