rain. A piece of the very finestground glass is placed in the lantern carrier in contact withthe back of the negative, the ground side of the glass bemgtowards the condenser. The proper glass to use is what isknown to the trade as Acid-etched Patent Plate. With theground glass and negative firmly clipped together in the car-rier, the latter should be held up to a good light and the groundglass worked on where more density is required by pencil orstump^—where more transparency is wanted the ground glassis touched with a rag which has been slightly moistened withoil or glycerine and water. To obtain the maximum efl^ect, aclear white oil should be used as a yellow oil naturally stops acertain amount of light. With a little care and practice theoil effect can be beautifully graduated. The edges of the work-ing are always slightly softened ofif on the print, owing tothere being two thicknesses of glass between the working andthe film.
