tive tests, one of many made to decide this point. Theview is a birch grove in the new forest, taken at half-past fourin a late October evening. The birches and bracken were vary-ing shades of yellow and russet, and the atmosphere decidedlyyellow. It may be seen that in the orthochromatic plate takenwithout the filter the sky is absolutely lost, and the tones of thefoliage inferiorly rendered, while the suggestion of sunlight,so well obtained in the filter negative, is quite absent from theone without the filter. This quality, of giving an impression ofsunlight, is, to my mind, one of the most valuable assets of thefilter, and I have never been able to get it satisfactorily in ordi-nary landscape work unless the fiter was used. (Figs. 3 and 4.) Unfortunately, orthochromatic plates and yellow filters donot necessarily mean superior tonal rendering, for there havefrequently been given illustrations from negatives taken withfilters that would deter anyone from ever employing an ortho- 30
