sed anything from a shawl to arubber piano cover. The principal thing to avoid is placingthe background so close to the subject that it is in focus, andthat a shadow of the subject is thrown on it. Photographers tell me it takes patience to photographgrown people. Much more, however, is required for children.It sometimes seems as if the only time they are good is whenasleep, but even sleeping beauties do not usually make goodpictures. You can make up your mind that your best results will bechance pictures, and that you will spoil many plates beforegetting a prize; but, once secured, you will realize that theprize is worth the cost. So make up your mind to be patient,or give up. Very often you can make much progress by studying your 230 subject for some time beforehand and trying to get the childsconfidence and good will amid the surroundings you wish. Itis then but a short step to introduce the camera and get theimpression—provided the light is propitious and the child ingood humor.

THE DAY DREAMER. H. M. GASSMAN. This humor is dependent largely upon the excitability of thegrown-ups in getting the child ready for the picture. Then,again, long before the time for the final posing, I have ob-served father, mother, sister, grandpa and the nurse trying to 231 aid in getting the right expression by fussing with the child,beating the air and making hideous sounds.
