The extent of the schools of yellowtail at Santa Catalina in summer is al-most beyond belief. The fish color thewater for acres, while the albicore andother big fish often beat the blue watersinto foam for miles. There are times when the yellow tailrefuses any bait, however tempting itmay be or scientifically handled. Atsuch times one can often plainly seegreat shoals of tnem beneath the boatand almost touch them with the line, tono purpose. When, however, thisgame fish concludes to feed, they be-come quite ravenous, often chasingsmaller fish upon the shore by theirpursuit. Usually this fish is taken on ahand line, and the object is to see howmany can be caught, and often by fol-lowing a school around a boat can bealmost filled with the fish. This past summer T tried them on a light rod, and had no difficulty in taking8 or lo pound fish on an eight ouncesplit bamboo rod, and curiously enoughsome of the largest on an old oil silktrout line of the smallest size.
