When the whale was killed the bcjatswere invisible from the beach and wereestimated to be ten miles off shoreAltogether eight bombs and severalharpoons and lances were put into thiswhale, a number of the bombs failingto explode. I saw one whole bomb, apiece of one that had exploded, andone harpoon taken out of the carcass,the shank of the latter being bent at aright angle by the struggles of theanimal. On being towed ashore, thebody grounded in twelve feet of water,and as there was then about two feetof the body above the surface its thick-ness must have been about fourteenfeet. Some idea of the size of thiswhale may be had by reference to thefollowing measurements, taken by thewriter. It was impossible to get all ofthem absolutely correct, as the carcasshad been very much mutilated whenseen, the head and tail having been cutoff and all the blubber removed fromone side. Totallength, fifty-three feet; circumferenceof body, about forty-five feet; lengthof lower jaw around curve, fourteenfeet; from eye to tip of upper jaw,nearly twelve feet; length of headabout thirteen and one-half feet; widthacross flukes of tail, seventeen feet;across one fluke, four feet two inches;diameter of eye-ball, about six inches;tickness of blubber—on back, eightinches; on breast eighteen inches;average all over, abotit twelve inches.The length of the longest whalebonewas seven feet two inches, and its totalweight 864 pounds. The amount ofoil this whale yielded was thirty-sixbarrels, first quality; of which thetongue q^ave about six barrels. Thescrappers also made three barrels fromthe refuse left by the owners after theywere through.
