Text Appearing Before Image:
shermen, who call them sow bass, from the fact that thosetaken are mostly female fish and arefound full of spawn. One observantfisherman tells us that the tautog ap-pears to enter into an actual state ofhibernation during freezing weather, ceasing to feed, with the vital functionsentirely suspended. This we can readilybelieve, as we saw in the Governmentssaltwater aquaria, at the Worlds Fairlast year, a tautog that deliberately laiddown flat upon its side on the bottom ofthe tank, and, although it did not snoreor close its eyes, its condition was aboutas near a siesta as that of any other ani-mal ever seen by us, either in or out ofthe water. This somniferous repose ofthe tautog occurred when the thermom-eter was high up in the eighties, andall nature was in full bloom. There wasno hibernation in this case, the fishlooked simply tired out or lazy, andwanted a rest. It might be par-doned for a grosser sin, when we con-sider the hurly-burly rampant in thewhite and windy city at the time.
Text Appearing After Image:
A Presidential Fish— The Taiitog or BlackfisJi 21 There is an old saying among fisher-men, that the tautog begin to run whenthe willows commence to turn green, and it seems verified, for the first of thethese fish are usually caught aboutthe middle of April, and they continuetheir visits to our waters until latein October, those taken latest beingof the finest flavor and of larger size. The best near-by localities for earlyblackfish are in Long Island Sound, ad-jacent to City Island; in Jamaica Bay,opposite the wreck of the Black War-rior, and later, on the Fishing Banks, but in fishing for them, take heed of thebergall. We read that the rhinoceroshas a faithful companion who assists inkeeping his thick hide in order; that thevoracious pike has his chirurgeon—theslimy tench—always by his side, whosetouch cures all fish ills; that the sharkhas his pilot fish, and it seems to bean assured fact that the bergall is thebody attendant of the tautog, and soslyly and nimbly does this berga
