A SUSPENSION BRIDGE IN THE INTERIOR OF YUNNAN
These bridges are dur-able and exceedingly picturesque. They are constructed of two iron chains firmly fastened tohuge rocks on either side of the river. Although the bridges shake and spring in a rather alarm-ing way when a caravan.is passing, they are fairly safe. In the background may be seen rice ter-races.Rice is cultivated in almost all of the val-leys in Yunnan, but the hillsides which once werewhite with the flowers of the poppy grown for opium, are now yellow with corn. Since 1906.when the late Empress Dowager issued an edictprohibiting the growing opium throughout China, there has been an.unceasing warfare car-ried on against its pro-duction, and in Yunnan.its growth has virtu-ally ceased. Opium smoking is by no means eliminated, however, and in the southern part of the province it is carried on openly and without check by the mandarins
