d. Accident had thrown ustogether from distant regions of the globe and a similarity oftaste led us to wander together among the romantic mountainsof Andalusia. And here, before setting forth, let me indulge in a fewprevious remarks on Spanish scenery and Spanish travelling.Many are apt to picture Spain to their imaginations as a softsouthern region, decked out with the luxuriant charms ofvoluptuous Italy. On the contrary, though there are ex-ceptions in some of the maritime provinces, yet, for thegreater part, it is a stern, melancholy country, with ruggedmountains, and long sweeping plains, destitute of trees, andindescribably silent and lonesome, partaking of the savage andsolitary character of Africa. What adds to this silence andloneliness, is the absence of singing-birds, a natural conse-quence of the want of groves and hedges.
