Filfil wasa contradiction; he loved a hunt and had no fear of wildanimals, but he went mad at the sound of a gun. Seeingthe magnificent herd of about fifteen giraffes before him,the horse entered into the excitement and needed no spur—down a slight hollow, flying over the dry buffalo holes, now over a dry watercourse and up the incline on theother side—then again on the Jevel, and the dust in myeyes from the cloud raised by the giraffes showed that wewere gaining in the race; misericordia /—low jungle laybefore us—the giraffes gained it, and spurring forwardthrough a perfect cloud of dust now within a hundredyards of the game we shot through the thorny bushes, Inanother minute or two I was close up, and a splendid bullgiraffe was crashing before me like a locomotive obeliskthrough the mimosas, bending the elastic boughs before IJIilllffi

A mass of thick and tangled thornsnow received them, and closed over the hardly-contestedrace—I was beaten. Never mind, it was a good hunt—first-rate—but wherewas my camp ? It was nearly dark, and I could justdistinguish the pass in the distance, by which we haddescended the mountain; thus I knew the direction butI had ridden about three miles, and it would be darkbefore I could return.
