Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Acland Memorial Hut.jpg |
English: This stone hut, near Selworthy Beacon high above Porlock on the West Somerset coast, is in memory of Sir Thomas Dyke Acland (1787-1871) (TDA). It was erected in September 1878 at the behest of John Barton Arundel Acland, the youngest of TDA's sons alive at the time. John had emigrated to the South Island of New Zealand in 1855 and, with his lifelong friend Charles George Tripp, had set up the Mount Peel Farmstead in the south of the Province of Canterbury. He named the homestead Holnicote after the estate which stretched from the Somerset coast between Porlock and Minehead to Dunkery Beacon in Exmoor. The Holnicote Estate had belonged to the Aclands since the beginning of the 19th century but, in 1944, the family bestowed it to the National Trust.
On one side of the hut is inscribed the dedication and on a second is written: "In remembrance of the Father who, during more than fifty years, took Sunday walks up this combe with his Children and Grandchildren, training them in the love of nature and of Christian Poetry this Wind and Weather Hut was built." On the other two sides are extracts of two of the verses TDA doubtless taught his children. The first is from 'First Sunday After Epiphany' by John Keble: "Needs no show of mountain hoary, Winding shore or deepening glen, Where the landscape in its glory Teaches truth to wandering men: Give true hearts but earth and sky, And some flowers to bloom and die, Homely scenes and simple views Lowly thoughts may best infuse." The second is by Reginald Heber: I praised the earth, in beauty seen, With garlands gay of various green; I praised the sea, whose ample field Shone glorious as a silver shield And earth and ocean seemed to say, Our beauties are but for a day. O God! O good beyond compare! If thus thy meaner works are fair, If thus thy beauties gild the span Of ruined earth and sinful man, How glorious must the mansion be Where thy redeemed shall dwell with thee! The Holnicote homestead as it was in 1997 is shown in the first comment. |
