Each movement meant something in its charming grace anddelicate. This \^■hite Hat dance takes one back to the days of the founding ofthe city of Los Angeles. Tradition handed down from father to son, tellshow the caravan of the founders came to El Rio Porcinuncula (the river ofthe pigs, as the Los .\ngeles river was known to the natives), and camped onthe east bank. An old grand dame, called to her grand child to run downand see if he could find water. The wanderers were weary with travel andthirsty after their long march over the desert and waterless land. The ladsoon returned from the river bed, so the tradition goes, with a gourd filledwith cool, sparkling water. For Dio. The dance is full ofmeaning. First there is the archness and coy hesitation of the maidens asthe sweet music brings out the words from the throats of the dancers, allthe time the dance is going on.
