Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe "Tar Lichen" - Verrucaria maura - geograph.org.uk - 1054120.jpg |
English: The "Tar Lichen" - Verrucaria maura. Different lichen species are typical of certain levels of the beach; their distinctive colours give rise to characteristic zones, so that lichenologists can speak of, for example, the "grey zone" and the "orange zone".
Furthest down the beach, in regions where the rocks are frequently submerged, is the "black zone". Verrucaria maura is typical of this zone: this species forms extensive patches on rock, and could easily be mistaken for a covering of tar or oil. The example shown in this photograph is fairly small, only a few centimetres across. The photograph shows a characteristic of this species: a pattern of cracks divides its surface into smaller areas (which are called areoles). Compare: 1055602. |
