Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The "Green" lough This is the dried up bed of the Green Lough that gives the surrounding Catholic parish its name. There was a fair sized lake at this place well into the 19th century though even by then it had been partially drained. In the lough was an artificial island or crannog. The crannog's most famous resident was Brian Carrach O’Neill one of the last Irish chieftains to rule these parts before the Plantation. Brian is reputed to have died in 1586 on the site of St Mary's Church, just across the road. The crannog was at some time known as Inisrush from which comes the name to the local village (now Innishrush).
