This postcard by the Jaipur-based firm Gobindram Oodeyram shows a little boy with the teat of a goat somewhat crudely photoshopped into his mouth (probably two superimposed images). To a European buying the postcard in colonial times, it would seem like an example of local primitiveness. To the Indian collector S. Annlickar, who put together a personal album he called Few Painting’s from Gobind Ram & Ooday-Ram-of Jaipur. Postcards – & Photographs. around 1905-06, this postcard appears on the first page, just below one of the god Krishna. For Annlickar, the postcard may have recalled the story of Krishna in exile being kept alive by goat’s milk.
