Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Thatched cottages, Denmark Road The listed building register entry for the nearer cottage (1991) describes this as C17, refaced and extended in C20. Timber frame encased in brick, except for end gables which are weatherboarded. Gable-ended thatched roof clad in corrugated iron sheets. Brick axial stack. Grade II. http://www.heritagegateway.org.uk/Gateway/Results_Single.aspx?resourceID=5&uid=50917

In 1999 the owners were given Listed Building consent for various modifications including thatching the roof*. http://egov.scambs.gov.uk/decisions/1999/S-0326-99-L.pdf The Images of England photo shows this work in progress in 2001. https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1127291

  • A sample from the long list of conditions: "The roof shall be thatched in longstraw, which has been shaken into a bed, dampened to make it pliable and pulled into yealms before being laid and securely fastened to the roofs. (Reason - To ensure the use of longstraw laid in a fashion traditional to this area and to avoid the use of dry bundles of straw dressed into place by hand or with a leggart driven against the butt ends.)"

Obviously the practice of driving a leggart against a butt end on long straw cannot be condoned!

The further cottage is listed as Olde Thatch, C17. Timber framed and roughcast rendered on brick sill, with thatched half-hipped roofs of long straw. Original ridge stack of gault brick to main range. http://www.heritagegateway.org.uk/Gateway/Results_Single.aspx?resourceID=5&uid=50746
