| Description | (Note: Just prior to this picture, I had uploaded a video showing the various stages in development of the Atashgah fire temple complex. This video is available on Flickr only as it seems to have disappeared from the album in Facebook despite having uploaded correctly). Back to the picture on hand, this is the actual 4-pillar Atashgah fire temple- the flame burns permanently inside. You can make it out faintly in the centre, though I have uploaded closer and clearer pictures later. As you can see, the temp is fairly small- it's the compound which is large. The rest of the complex is multi use and comprises of storage, accommodations for the two religious sects (Hindus and Zoroastrians), a school and stuff. Also included is a large pit which I'd read somewhere was for cremating bodies of the dead. The fire was once fed by a vent from a subterranean natural gas field located directly beneath the complex, but heavy exploitation of the natural gas reserves in the area during the Soviet rule resulted in the flame going out in 1969. Today, the museum's fire is fed by mains gas piped in from Baku city. (Gobustan, Azerbaijan, Sept. 2017) |
