Summary
[edit]DescriptionThal SG church interior.jpg | The incredible history of this church is more than 1,200 years old and began in the 7th to 8th centuries. After it burnt down for the first time, the church was rebuilt in the 10th century. In the 12th century it was rebuilt again in an enlarged shape. Then there was another fire, and the church was rebuilt a fourth time in the 14th century. In 1420 the upper part of the tower collapsed and destroyed the choir. The repair then gave the present shape of the church. In 1532 the parity usage began by both denominations with an expansion of the sacristy. From 1770 to 1780, the interior was adapted to the Baroque style. In 1904 the tower was new built according to plans by architect August Hardegger from St. Gallen. The today's organ was installed in 1952 by the company Theodor Kuhn from Männedorf, founded in 1864. The company still exists today after 152 years. In 1978 the church was totally refurbished and listed under monument protection. But that's not all. The clockwork has been designed that it tolls twice every hour as time designation, in two different pitches. Some believe that it is because of the parity use by both denominations, but that's not true. It is assumed that the watchmaker had the idea that people can count the bells again when they are unsure the first time. At 12 o'clock, there are 32 bell strokes. Four times two strokes for the full hour, and twice twelve strokes for the time. |
