ar bundle is connectedwith the cortex by a very loose spongy tissue, so that itappears to He almost isolated in a cylinder filled with airand connected with the walls only here and there byparenchymatous cells. In the other families of the class asheath of thick-walled fibriform cells arranged in severallayers takes the place of this spongy tissue (Fig. 452 s).The structure of the vascular bundle itself is always uniform. The xylem-portion consists of wider vascular cells in itsinner, of narrower vascular cells in its outer part; the bast-portion possesses vessels, fibres, and parenchymatous tissue. The axial vascular bundle sends out ramifications into thebranches and leaves. In all the Lycopodiaceae the fructification takes theform of sporangia or capsules which burst open when ripe, seated in the axils of the leaves, and often, as in Lycopodium^constituting a pecuHar spike-like receptacle. The famihes Selaginellese and Isoetese have two kinds 330 Striictitral and Physiological Botany.
