It lies outside of the palpebral portion, upon the marginof the orbit and the parts surrounding it. The levator palpebrce superioris arises at the bottom of the orbit fromthe circumference of the optic canal, and from this point runs forward, lyingas it does so upon the superior rectus (with which it is intimately connectedby bands of fascia.—D.). Spreading out in the form of a fan, its tendonruns down upon the anterior surface of the tarsus of the upper lid (I, Fig.283). Besides this striated levator muscle of the lid, there is also an organicmuscle discovered by Heinrich Muller, and called the masculus tarsalis supe-rior. The smooth fibers of this arise from between the striated fibers of thelevator, along the under surface of which they too run to the upper marginof the tarsus (t, Fig. 283).
