(2) The same in the middle of the thigh.(3) External popliteal and musculo-cutaneous nerves. LOWER EXTREMITY 325 Thigh—Posterior Surface 248. Great Sciatic Nerve (Fig. 148). For its exposure where it enters the buttock,see ligature of sciatic artery (Fig. 140). To expose it at the xupper Pari °f ^ie thigh, a vertical incision is made descendingfrom the fold of the buttock from a point midway between the tuber ischii and theposterior border of the great trochanter. After division of the skin and fascia, thelower border of the gluteus maximus is exposed and drawn upwards so as to exposethe outer edge of the biceps, which runs obliquely downwards and outwards. Betweenthe fascia lata and the biceps is the small sciatic nerve. The large trunk of the greatsciatic nerve lies deeper under the outer edge
