The vestibular branch of the auditory nerve is not stimulated in this manner, but by certain changes in the i)osition of the body, .sometimes of the head alone. 276 ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY FOR NURSES. THE SENSE OF SIGHT. The eye is the organ of sight. It is situated in the orbital fossa. It is a sphere or globe having for its surface three layers called thecoats or tunics of the eye—namely the sclera and cornea (fibrous), thechoroid and iris (vascular), and the retina (nervous). They containthree transparent structures—the aqueous humor, crystalline lensand vitreous body. The sclera is the white of the eye. It is dense and tough, protecting the more delicate structures within. One-sixth of thesurface of the ball in front is occupied by the cornea instead of the Retina Choroid Sclera

It is the most prominent part of the eyeball, andits convexity may be seen by looking across an eye from the side. The junction of the cornea with the sclera resembles the fitting of awatch-crystal in its case. The portion of the sclera which is visible when the eyelids areseparated, and also the cornea, are both covered by a thin membranecalled the conjunctiva; it is a modified mucous membrane, bearingblood-vessels which can be easily seen, especially if a little dilated. The choroid.—The middle coat, next to the sclerotic, is neitherdense nor tough, but is made up of fine tissue fibers bearing a very THE EYE. 277 delicate and close network of blood-vessels
