L'artiste a réalisé une version exotique de la tentation d'Ève dans un paysage luxuriant, avec, à la place du serpent, un lézard ailé qui l'incite à saisir une fleur en guise de fruit défendu. Dans l'imaginaire de Gauguin, Tahiti reste un lieu où, malgré la colonisation française, les habitants vivent encore en symbiose avec la Nature
