Description

Mars Express HRSC image of central Terra Sirenum. This image captures most of Li Fan crater, a 104 km diameter impact basin. A very large dust devil (~750 m wide) is seen in the bottom left corner of this crater. This is part of dust lifting activity that was occurring throughout the region when this image was taken.

Elsewhere, bright CO2 frost deposits are visible. This region is located in the southern midlatitude regions, where winter nights get cold enough for the atmosphere to start freezing out on the surface. Although the frost generally sublimates back into the atmosphere during the day, in some shaded alcoves, this frost can persist through the day.

This image was taken on Mars Express' 8611th orbit of Mars, September 25, 2010.
