Español: Vista de la selva amazónica venezolana desde la cima de un tepuy. Flickr description: El tepuy es una meseta especialmente abrupta, con paredes verticales y cimas muy planas (aunque no aplica en todos los casos), compuesta de cuarcitas y areniscas con algunos lechos delgados de pizarra, característicos del denominado Escudo de las Guayanas principalmente en la zona de la Gran Sabana venezolana. Igualmente es posible encontrar estas singulares formaciones en menores cantidades en países vecinos como Guyana, Brasil y Colombia. Estas montañas son las formaciones expuestas más antiguas en el planeta: su origen data del Precámbrico. Son un complejo entre la frontera norte del río Amazonas y el Orinoco, entre la costa Atlántica y el Río Negro. A lo largo del curso de la historia de Tierra, la meseta se erosionó, y se formaron los tepuis. |
