ventilated by outside windows and over500 feet of wide halls. The chambers are unusually large, arranged soas to admit abundant sunlight, and in their con-struction especial attention was given to securingperfect ventilation. The furniture and appoint-ments are homelike and comfortable, and the build-ing is carpeted throughout. While luxury has notbeen studied, every convenience necessary for healthand comfort has been supplied. In this respect fewhomes in the country are more complete. The School of Music and the Art Studio occupythe entire fourth floor. Each floor is supplied with water, bath and toiletrooms, electric bells, and ample hose and fire buckets. The buildings and grounds are abundantly suppliedwith pure freestone water from a large spring nearthe Institute, from which the water is pumped intoa cistern, and thence into a large tank in the tower, and from this distributed through the buildings andgrounds. Drinking-water is supplied from an ex-cellent well in the grounds. 72

General Information. A watchman is on duty all night, and his numer-ous stations throughout the building and aroundthe premises are registered by an electric watch-mans clock. The Institute Home. Every effort is made to give the Institute thecharacter of a Christian home. Teachers and pupilsconstitute one household. Care is taken to renderthe home life of the student not only attractive, butconducive to the cultivation of those graces of char-acter which mark refined women. Only such re-strictions are thrown around the pupils as are consid-ered important for their health, safety, and improve-ment. Importance is attached to the cultivation ofthat considerate regard for the wishes and feelingsof others which leads to courteous deportment. A student who persists in disobedience or disre-spect, or even neglect of duty, and who is evidentlygaining no good herself and hindering others, is notpermitted to remain in the Institute. Pupils arenot allowed to leave the grounds without permis-sion
