The older, or series, type oftelephone is usually provided with a bell of compara-tively low resistance—that is, 60 to 80 ohms—and amagneto generator having its armature normallyshunted when not in use for ring signaling. Withthe best arrangement of this type it is impracticableto place a large number of instruments in series andsecure satisfactory transmission, because of the atten-uation of the current in passing through so manymechanisms. The instruments of the bridging typeare so adapted that they can be placed in multiple orbridging relationship with the line, and now they arecommonly so placed for party lines having more thanone substation.
