Telephone conduits.—A telephone conduit is a longlongitudinal passageway which is built beneath ahighway and in which one or more cables may beplaced. In the first efforts to build underground linesthe simple plan was adopted of burying a cable eitherdirectly in the ground or in a trench or box filled withsand. But this means that the cable is inaccessibleunless the pavement is lifted, hence such built-in sys-tems were found to be impractical. For the so-calleddrawing-in systems pipe-like passageways are builtin the streets so that they open at intervals of from200 to 400 feet into vaults or chambers which affordaccess to the ducts. Thus the conduit and the cableare entirely distinct, and cables may at any time beintroduced or removed with no interfere
