Summary
[edit]DescriptionTelegraphicPlateau.jpg |
English: Page of the American weekly newspaper Harper’s Weekly with cuttings of the bottom morphology of the central Atlantic Ocean (top: East-West profile along the “Telegraph Pleateau” between Trinity Bay, Newfoundland, and Valentia Bay, Ireland; bottom: North-South profile with Capverdes, Azores, and “Telegraph Plateau”) and an early sediment sampling device. The device conists of a rod B that is hollow at its lower end. The rod is put into a cannon ball which is pierced by a bore. The cannon ball is hold by a sling which, in turn, is hold by movable hooks at the upper end of the rod. When the device reaches the ground and eventually gets stuck into the sediment the hooks will flap down and release the sling. Then the rod with the sediment sample can be pulled out of the cannon ball and hauled up to the surface. |
