Title: Nataraja

Provenance: Motupalli, Prakasam district.

Acc. no. 78-35

In this fine bronze of the Chola period, Shiva is seen as supreme god and lord of dance, Nataraja. The god is shown in the nandatandava. In this upper right hand he holds a drum, representing primordial sound of creation. The upper left hand holds a flame of destruction, that both destroys and cleanses the impurity of the soul, indicating the opposite in his nature that are symbolized by both female and male earrings.

He makes the gesture 'Have to fear' and points to his raised left foot, symbolizing release or place of refuge and salvation for the worshipper. He treads upon the prostrate dwarf of ignorance, and illusion. Apasmara and the sense of ego which a devotee must overcome. The diminutive figure and goddess Ganga appears in his flowing hair. The god maintains an exquisite poise and equanimity at the centre of the whirling cycle of cosmic activity, symbolized by the flaming circle.
