Description
English: Teignmouth: Bitton House. Now the local council offices, originally the home of the first Viscount Exmouth, Admiral Sir Edward Pellew, a Cornishman. Two cannon from the 1816 siege of Algiers stand sentinel. Pellew worked his way up in the Royal Navy as a frigate captain, later commanding squadrons in the Far East and the Mediterranean. He has been described by one authority as fearless, unorthodox, acquisitive and courageous [Richard Woodman, The Sea Warriors, Constable 2001]
