English: Teffont Manor House and its history This is the front of Teffont Manor House which, until recently, was the home of the Mayne family of Exeter and their descendants. It has since been converted into flats. This West Country branch of the Maynes traces its line back to Richard Mayne, a successful brewer and Freeman of the City of Exeter in the 16th century. In 1679, the family moved to Teffont taking over this large estate beside a peaceful and beautiful stretch of the river Nadder. The last of the family in the male line was John Thomas Mayne (1792-1843), a barrister trained at the Inner Temple who became a Fellow of the Royal Society. He was an eccentric but had all the advantages of wealth and descent, yet his own legacy and the future of his family became an obsession. The final irony was that his only son, Augustus John, died unmarried before him. The estate was inherited by his youngest daughter whose descendants were in residence until about the 1980s.
