Description
English: This is one of the largest monasteries and temples complex found in Sirpur excavations so far. This site is unusual as it blends Hindu artwork with Buddhist icons and artwork. For example, next to vihara-like structure is a temple with a doorway covered with mithuna (amorous couple) artwork and Gajalakshmi on the lalatabimba. Buddhist monasteries predominantly feature only Buddha-related iconography and Jataka tale artwork; they do not include kama-scenes of secular life. However, here we see pillar and doorway artwork with kama-scenes that is typically found in royal Hindu temples of central India.
