La théière est un élément du nécessaire qui se compose également d'un sucrier et de son couvercle, de deux tasses et de leurs soucoupes, en porcelaine de Chine, d'un flacon en cristal à pans, de deux cuillers et d'une boite à thé en or ciselé. L'ensemble est placé dans un coffret garni d'or et plaqué de bois d'amarante et d'acajou composé à Paris en 1717-1722. C'est très certainement un cadeau du Régent, Philippe d'Orléans (1674-1723), à son épouse Françoise-Marie (1677-1749). Ce nécessaire est décrit avec une grande précision dans l'inventaire du garde-meuble du Palais-Royal, parmi les bijoux de sa femme. (extrait copié du site du Louvre)
