Summary
[edit]DescriptionTe Ngutu o te Manu (14882374558).jpg |
On 7 September 1868, sixty Ngāti Ruanui defenders led by Riwha Titokowaru won a brilliant victory at the Battle of Te Ngutu o Te Manu. It was one of a number of decisive confrontations during the Taranaki Land Wars, and is remembered for both the strategic defence and layout of the pā, and the death of Gustavus von Tempsky. Two earlier attacks on the pā by Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas McDonnell had resulted in failure and four deaths. His third attempt was also a costly affair: "in all 50 Europeans, one-fifth of the assault party, were killed or wounded as a result of the assault on Te Ngutu o te Manu" notes nzhistory.net.nz. This was due to the careful positioning of the servery outnumbered Ngāti Ruanui, who used rifle pits and the layout of the pā perfectly. This, and later defeats in Taranaki, sent shock waves through colonial New Zealand, and contributed to Titokowaru becoming "one of the most successful opponents of British colonization anywhere." This 1868 drawing from a series of early Lands and Survey maps shows the layout of Te Ngutu o te Manu at the time of the battle. Visible at the very top of the drawing is the clearing where, according to James Belich, colonial forces were "knocked over like ninepins" from heavy fire on three sides. It shows the heavy bush surrounding the pā and the tracks in and out of the clearing. Te Ngutu is now a 50-acre (20-ha) reserve, much of it still under heavy bush.
