Summary
[edit]DescriptionTaynish Mill ruin - geograph.org.uk - 827140.jpg |
English: Taynish Mill ruin The waterwheel would have sat against the wall, between the two trees, the water flowing onto the wheel from above and behind, on the left. A leat runs at the base of the wall, on which a small metal gear wheel is still in place.
The nearby information board includes the following: The mill was built in about 1724* and for about 150 years milled the locally produced oats, rye and bere (a type of barley) - known generically as 'corn'- into meal. It was an estate mill and the tenants were expected to bring their corn to be milled here. The mill was powered by a pitchback wheel (water falls onto the wheel behind top centre and flows out under wheel) driving 2 sets of millstones: one pair shelled the grain, the second ground it. The building had two stories, with living accommodation in the upper floor, storage in the lower floor. A corn drying kiln was added later. By the 1890's, 20 years after milling ceased, the building was still used as a cow byre and living accommodation. Nowadays, no grain is grown locally and the area round the mill is largely woodland, grassland and bog.
