Summary
[edit]DescriptionTaxi rank sign, Belfast - geograph.org.uk - 1194822.jpg |
English: Taxi rank sign, Belfast This sign is at the rank in Bridge Street and denotes the blacks taxis which ply, on fixed routes (similar to buses), in north Belfast and Newtownabbey specifically Monkstown and the Doagh Road. Other parts of west and north Belfast have similar services.
The term black taxi is an unofficial one used to distinguish such vehicles from the standard hackney carriage which can be hailed. Until the passing of the Taxis Act (NI) 2008, taxis in Belfast were either public hire which could be hailed and operated from public ranks or private hire which could not and which could only be booked by telephone, by calling in person at the operators office or from private ranks such as railway and bus stations. All fares were per vehicle. The distinctions were abolished by the Act which also regularisied the black taxis by allowing them to charge what it calls separate fares to each passenger ie similar to buses. |
