35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Aves; Order: Falconiformes; Family: Accipitridae; Genus: Aquila; Genus species: Anitibyx armatus. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 65-75 cm; Identification: The tawny eagle is red-brown to yellow-buff in color. It lacks any conspicuous markings; Habitat: Forested mountains, valleys, plains; Diet: Carnivore: carrion, insects, small birds and mammals; Reproduction: Nests, usually built in tree tops, are often used for several years in a row. The season for breeding varies by location. One to two eggs are laid by the female; Social Structure: Tawny eagles are either solitary or in pairs; Behavior: The tawny eagle associates with vultures and other carrion feeders at lion kills and around camps; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: Tawny eagles are prone to rob other raptors and have even been known to drive the big martial eagle from its prey.
