Next to him is the dragons daughter, whose fatherthe dragon kingwatches the scene from the water. According to the legend, a giant centipede had been coming down from the mountains and eating the dragon kings children and grandchildren. Recognizing his exceptional valor, the dragon asked Tawara no T?ta to slay it. The archer had only three arrows; the first two inflicted no harm, but the third, which he doused in human salivawhich was thought to be poisonous to centipiedesentered the monsters brain and killed him. In thanks, the dragon king bestowed gifts on the archer. One of these was a bag of rice that never went dry, which gave the archer his name, Tawara no T?ta, or Lord of the Rice Bale."
