Description
Français : Tas de traverses de chemin de fer. Lorsqu'une voie est déposée, élimination ou valorisation d'un matériau tel que le bois semblent ne poser aucun problème.

Dans les faits, il n'en est rien en raison de la créosote. Ce composé chimique dérivé du goudron, à l'odeur si particulière lorsqu'on passe à proximité, fût longtemps utilisé pour ses propriétés antifongiques (champignons & bactéries), insecticides (xylophages), en d'autres termes agent conservateur. Mais ce dernier est surtout cancérigène, toxique à l'inhalation comme au toucher... Sachant cela, hors de question d'incinérer en l'état en raison des émanations ! Le traitement doit impérativement être réalisé par une entreprise agréée, et le personnel amené à manipuler les éléments, protégé en conséquence. Quant au transport, celui-ci relève de l'accord européen ADR sur les matières dangereuses.

Le même problème se pose pour les poteaux téléphoniques, peu à peu remplacés aujourd'hui par des mâts en résine composite (fibre de verre)...
