How much of this at USFWS? All of it!

Female Conservation Hero or Mentor? Why?

Colleen Sculley (Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration) has been an indispensable mentor to me as a woman in conservation. Jen Vashon of Maine DIFW is a constant inspiration to me – she’s approachable, informed, and inspires a lot of confidence in the field. She’s also a sportswoman, and an experienced trapper.

When you began your career, did you ever see yourself working for the USFWS?

I got really good career advice and mentorship as an undergraduate at UConn and had my heart set on USFWS early on. I’ve been exploring a few different USFWS programs to find a position where my skills and interests can best contribute to the Service and our mission. It’s been a long discovery process. The scope of what we do is so broad and diverse; I’m constantly meeting new people and learning about projects and initiatives that really inspire me.

The mission of the USFWS is “Working with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people” How do you contribute to this mission?

I’m working in External Affairs, focusing on communication efforts for urban Hispanic audiences. Being Hispanic myself and a first-generation American, the Urban Partnership Initiative is something I feel really passionate about. My objective is to share who we are and what we do as an agency, and to foster an appreciation for nature and the outdoors.

It takes a special person to dedicate their lives to public service. Why did you choose this path?

A lot of my early experiences, hiking, kayaking, and hunting fostered a love and respect for the natural world that led to a career in conservation. One of my best, early memories is from visiting the monarch overwintering habitat in Mexico with my family.

What is a special memory you have of working at the USFWS?

The tern colony at the height of the nesting season, looking for sneaky oystercatcher and plover nests, long treks along the shore, and lots of laughter at Monomoy NWR.
