Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This photograph suggests how hardened some soldiers must have become to the suffering that was around them every day in World War I. In this picture the bodies of German soldiers are clearly visible, but none of the Allied troops passing with the tanks even looks at the bodies, or checks to see if any of the people can still be saved.

The word 'cavalry' here probably refers to the tanks rather than to soldiers on horseback. Although the traditional cavalry was still regarded as an important part of the army in 1914, the nature of trench warfare on the Western Front quickly started taking a terrible toll on cavalry horses and men. Tanks, designed for trench warfare, were in many ways the modern successor to warhorses, and many ex-horsemen were transferred to the tank divisions, retaining the title 'cavalrymen'.
[Original reads: 'Tanks passing dead Germans who were alive before the cavalry advanced a few minutes before the picture was taken.']
