Description
English: Tankard, pewter, slightly tapered plain drum, stepped flat top, (.) thumbpiece, pierced wavy edge in lid opposite handle, hollow handle with ramshorn terminal additional comments- description- “Flat lid” makers comment- “These marks are unrecorded. The most likely candidate is Richard Meacock III of Chester (PS6548), 1650-c1705.” other comments- “The ramshorn (or scroll) handle terminal, the palm thumbpiece and the denticulations on the lid all point to North West England, c1680-1700. However, Wigan pewterers are well recorded and there is no-one in Wigan of this period with the initials RM. Our Wigan expert has therefore suggested it might be Richard Meacock of Chester, which is not far away. He was the third of three generations of pewterers. We haven't previously identified marks for any of them. (Your notes overlook the ownership initials MI.)” Peter Hayward, Database Manager, Pewter Society, England, 28 February 2008
