Harbor at Tangier Bell System engineers came ashore here frequently during the past winter,discovered and named by Captain John Smith in 1608 The island was days such as these were not the onlyoccasions when communication wassorely needed; but, of course, it wasmost essential at such times. Providing Emergency Service 1ELEPHONE connection by submarinecable had often been considered, butboth shallow water and extensiveoyster dredging would make any cableinsecure. This fact led to repeatedrejection by telephone engineers ofall such cable projects. Progressivedevelopments in the art of radiotelephony suggested new approachesto the problem.
