One bleak, dreary afternoon he was sitting inthe old church-yard, looking at the tomb-stones.He felt so forlorn, and everything looked sogloomy that he began to cry, when, all at once,a fearful-looking man stood before him, and criedout, Keep still, or Ill cut your throat! Of course Pip was badly scared when he lookedup and saw this man all covered with mud andwith a rag tied around his head, and a great ironon his leg. Tell us your name, said the man. Pip, sir, whispered the boy. Show us where you live. Pip pointed outthe houses of the village almost a mile away. TALKS ABOUT AUTHORS. Ill Then after asking him a number of questionsand finding out that he lived with Joe Gargery,the blacksmith, the man ordered him to go homeand bring him back a file and something to eat,telling him if he didnt come back he would killhim, sure.

Ive only been to the churchyard, whimperedPip, thinking it was pretty hard to get such awhipping after being so scared by that fearfulman. That night, while Mrs. Joe cut the bread forsupper, Pip was wondering how he could smugglesome of it in his pockets for the poor man downin the graveyard. While he was thinking ofthis he heard shots
