Cymraeg: Tai Llyn (formerly Rhes Cwmorthin), Cwmorthin, ger - near Tanygrisiau, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Gwynedd, Cymru (Wales).
Dechreuwyd cloddio am lechi yng Nghwmorthin ym 1810, pan agorwyd chwarel fechan ar y safle gan y teulu Casson a oedd hefyd yn gweithio yn chwarel Diphwys Casson, ymhellach i'r dwyrain. Gadawodd tua 96,000 o dunelli o lechi y chwarel rhwng 1861 a 1876. Enillodd y chwarel enw da am amodau gwaith gwael a chafodd ei hadnabod yn lleol fel "Y Lladd-dy". Ffurfiwyd Cwmni Cwmorthin Newydd yn 1876 yn dilyn cwymp y cwmni gwreiddiol. Ffurfiwyd yr Oakeley Slate Quarries Company Limited ym 1884 i reoli'r chwareli. Ym 1882, roedd y chwarel yn cyflogi dros 500 o ddynion, a chynhyrchwyd llechi mewn tair melin, dwy ohonynt yn cael eu pweru gan olwynion dŵr ac un gan injan stêm. Cwmni Llechi Cymreig Newydd - dymchwelodd 6.25 miliwn tunnell o graig i'r gweithfeydd. Estynnwyd y chwarel ar i lawr, gyda phum llawr o dan lefel y llyn.English: Tai Llyn (formerly Rhes Cwmorthin), Cwmorthin, ger - near Tanygrisiau, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Gwynedd, Cymru (Wales).
Slate extraction began at Cwmorthin in 1810, when a small quarry was opened on the site[1] by the Casson family who were also working the Diphwys Casson quarry, further to the east. Some 96,000 tons of slates left the quarry between 1861 and 1876. The quarry gained a reputation for poor working conditions and was known locally as "The Slaughterhouse". New Cwmorthin Company was formed in 1876 following the collapse of the original company. The Oakeley Slate Quarries Company Limited was formed in 1884 to manage the quarries. In 1882, the quarry employed over 500 men, and slates were produced in three mills, two of which were powered by water wheels and one by a steam engine. New Welsh Slate Company - 6.25 million tons of rock collapsed into the workings. The quarry was extended downwards, with five floors below the lake level. In 1897, the company employed 290 people, of which 153 worked underground. y 1896, they were working as a co-operative. 10 per cent of the profits were shared amongst all workers who held £5 in shares, and a further 10 per cent was shared amongst those with £100 of shares. 77,367 tons of slates were produced under New Welsh Slate Company ownership. The company went into voluntary liquidation, and was wound up in 1902.[ |
