English: Evening light hits the Tablets of the Missing at Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery in Belgium, Sept. 9, 2016. ABMC photo: Warrick Page
The Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery in Belgium covers 57 acres and contains 7,992 U.S. military dead from World War II. The headstones are arranged in gentle arcs sweeping across a broad green lawn that slopes gently downhill. A highway passes through the cemetery. West of the highway is an overlook that affords an excellent view of the rolling Belgian countryside, once a battlefield. To the east is the long colonnade with the chapel and map room. On the rectangular piers of the colonnade are inscribed the names of 450 missing. - More about the cemetery: www.abmc.gov/Henri-Chapelle |
