Tablet marking the tomb of Father Junipero Serra at Mission San Carlos Borromeo, Monterey, ca.1905
Photograph of the tablet marking the tomb of Father Junipero Serra at Mission San Carlos Borromeo, Monterey, ca.1905. A cross is engraved at top. The tablet reads (dark lettering on marble or granite): "Hic jacent exuviae, Adm. Rev. Patris Juniperi Serra, O.S.F., Missionum Californiae fundatoris, AC Praesidis in pace depositae, die XXVIII mensis Augusti A.D. MDCCLXXXIV, atque sociorum ejus, R.R.P.P. Joannis Crespi, Juliani Lopes, et Francisci Lasuen, requiescant in pace." Father Serra died August of 1784.
