Description
English: Rectangular tablecloth with a flower design. The tablecloth is a remarkable piece of Arts and Crafts whitework embroidery, which comes with makers name and approximate date from the donor. rectangular cloth with design symmetry around long central axis. Eight large flowers, some with different central motifs - techniques. Included are two designs of smaller flowers, and all floral motifs are connected with foliage and well executed stitchery. Variety of filling stitches employed especially in the flowers (including bullion knots, woven spiderweb wheels, French knots and bullion knots). Hemstitched edges appear to be hand stitched, with threads withdrawn to the edges of the cloth, suggesting work is from Victorian-Edwardian period. The unusual eleven petal flower motif is highly likely to follow a pattern of the Ladies Work Society, London and as seen in William Morris’ embroidered cushion pattern circa 1876. Annie Hawken’s likely “magnum opus”.
