Notes

19.9.84, Mr David Thomson, 112 Mountain Road, ph 602-067, called and said that he had known Miss Hoole of Rotorua and that she had always said the table was one of a pair presented to the Duke of Wellington after the Battle of Waterloo.

The sofa table became more fashionable from 1800. Usually it had two end-flaps that extended the length of top. They were either supported at each end or by a central pedestal with four splayed legs ending with lion and claw feet on castors, like this example. Drawers were included in the frieze. A practical table it was used in the library, drawing room, or ladies’ room for reading, drawing or reading.
